Lower Saxony's best school newspapers: New talents celebrated!
Last weekend the celebratory award ceremony for the best school newspapers in Germany took place in Berlin. Outstanding journalistic work was honored in the impressive backdrop of the Federal Council. And that provides a breath of fresh air in the media landscape!
The Heinrich-Ernst-Stötzner School from Hanover won first prize in the school newspaper category with its newspaper “Dein Ernst?”. The editors impressed with a colorful mix of reports on school trips, puzzles and interviews. The reward was prize money of 1,000 euros. The runners-up, the Lucas Cranach School from Gotha, were pleased to receive the award for their school newspaper “Moskito” and prize money of 500 euros. The Adolf Kolping Vocational School from Munich won third place with the newspaper “KOKO”, for which they received 250 euros. Nachrichtenleicht reports that schools from various other categories such as vocational schools and primary schools were also honored at the award ceremony.
A lively media event
The Junge Presse Niedersachsen organized the “uncensored” competition for the seventh time and recorded lively participation. Around 50 editorial teams from Lower Saxony applied. Prizes were awarded in five school categories and six special prizes. In the lively media landscape of Lower Saxony, Prime Minister Stephan Weil was also pleased with the insights that the competition offers. “The students’ commitment shows that the media landscape will remain alive in the future,” he said with a proud smile.
Special categories were also recognized at this festive award. The best school newspaper in Germany, the Heinrich-Ernst-Stötzner-Schule, shone in the special school category at the federal level. The significant influence of media and the joy of journalism were particularly emphasized here. Felix Harbart, deputy editor-in-chief of the Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung, emphasized the importance of media work when awarding the prize. The award ceremony was also supported by well-known personalities, including Wiebke Osigus, Lower Saxony's Minister for Europe, who presented a special prize.

Such events strengthen the connection between school newspapers and the media world and give young people the opportunity to express their opinions and address issues that concern them.
Overall, the competition shows how important school newspapers are for media education. Whether in Lower Saxony or elsewhere – the value that these young talents represent is priceless. This is also shown by the nationwide youth press competition in Germany, where the best works were honored in other categories. Jugendpresse reports that experts from media companies selected the winners and that the students' passion for journalism was underlined.
