This significant building, which was built around the year 1300 of basalt masonry and trachtystein, represents one of the few remaining remains of the Rhine wall from the Middle Ages. The customs gate served as an access from the banks of the Rhine to the Thurnmarkt and owes its name to a customs house in which goods were taxed.

The renovation of the customs gate, which caused around 50,000 euros, was carried out as part of a five -month project. Restorer Jan Schwieren was responsible for the work that included the filling of cavities and eliminating plant wing. In addition, the damaged archway was preserved and restored.
