PayPal revolutionizes purchasing: now also in Frankfurt Cafés!

Frankfurt, Deutschland - Cashless paying at the cash register is picking up more and more speed in Germany. In a Frankfurt Café, a new service from PayPal was recently tested, which enables customers to pay with the popular payment platform even in stationary retail. Both the seller Lara and a curious customer tried the PayPal payment in the try-out. The transaction worked smoothly without any changes to the card terminal. This step encourages PayPal to expand its market shares in inpatient payment transactions, since the use of PayPal has so far mainly been limited to online payments. According to the Tagesschau show surveys that many customers have never used Paypal at the cash register.

Matthias Rosch from PayPal said that only a stored bank account and the updated PayPal app are required for the use of the new service. This app works similarly to a virtual debit card and enables users to carry out safe cashless payment transactions. A single code is guaranteed by a single code that is transmitted to the card terminal without transmitting the card details or bank account details. Authentication, for example through fingerprint, also contributes to the high security standards. Interestingly, PayPal will also offer a payment in installments, but this is associated with high interest rates of almost 13% per year.

Future of paying in Germany

The change to cashless payment methods is no longer to be stopped in Germany. According to an investigation by the Bundesbank, around half of all transactions were paid in cash in 2023. Nevertheless, PayPal is optimistic that this will change with the introduction of new payment methods such as your own app. For comparison: In the European Union there is a growing number of cashless transactions. Statista reports that the EU member states of the EU recorded high numbers of cashless payments in 2023, and this should be a useful context for the expansion of PayPal.

Another player on the European payment market is the newly launched payment service Wero. This aims to offer international providers and plans to strengthen wallet solutions in the dealers' offer. According to a current survey by the EHI Retail Institute, the results of which are published in the summer of 2025, 46.8% of the dealers have already planned the integration of Apple Pay in their payment mix, while 36.2% of Google Pay would like to implement. The total turnover of the companies last year was 45.1 billion euros and underlines the relevance of digital payment transactions.

market shares and challenges

Consumer advocate Katharina Lawrence feels concerned with the current dominance of American companies and sees the need for more European competitors to create a balanced market landscape. In this context, PayPal acts as a provider that could also benefit from the creation of a functioning ecosystem in the area of digital payment methods. The new service could be an easy and quick way for many customers to overcome concerns about cashless payments and to improve the user experience as a whole.
