An extraordinary natural spectacle awaits visitors on Lake Constance in Überlingen. In June 2025, two Queen-Victoria-Agaven blooms there, a rarity, since Agaven only bloom once in their lives. This usually happens after 15 to 20 years, and the flowering period is considered the death sentence for the plants. The inflorescence of one of the Agaven is currently measures over five meters, while hundreds of buds are waiting to open up. These impressive plants can be admired on the south-east corner of the plant house, which was built in 2021 in the course of the State Garden Show to upgrade the park of the villa gardens.
The importance of the agave for the botanical garden in Überlingen is underlined by the fact that it includes an extensive collection of cactus. Over 1,000 cacti and succulents can be found there, some of them more than 100 years old and weigh up to 300 kilograms. Already on June 2, the first bloom of the queen of the night (Selenicereus Grandiflorus), another botanical sensation in the plant house, opened. The flowers reach a diameter of up to 30 cm and prefer to bloom in the summer months. The shooting of the queen of the night are snake -like and can become several meters long. This exotic plant originally comes from Central America and the Caribbean.
