Playboy Germany: Facebook page surprisingly deleted! Shock for fans!

Playboy Germany's Facebook page, which had over 1.9 million followers, is currently no longer found. The deactivation of the site by Meta Platforms Inc. raises many questions to which Kouneli Media GmbH, the publisher of the site, has not yet received answers. According to rnd.de, it is unclear whether the page has been blocked since Monday last week or even permanently deleted. The publisher was unable to obtain detailed information from Meta, although a written request to restore the Dublin page was sent to the social media platform.

The editor-in-chief of Playboy Germany, Florian Boitin, is concerned about the situation and assumes a possible precedent that could affect not only Playboy, but press freedom in general. Boitin warns that decisions about journalistic content could be left to automated systems. A search for “Playboy Germany” on Facebook currently only shows the US counterpart, while the German page is marked with the note “This content is currently unavailable”.

Interviews and advice from lawyers

Kouneli Media has already taken legal action after all attempts to obtain information from Meta failed. According to horizont.net, there was contradictory information from Meta customer support, which could neither justify nor reverse the measure. The publisher was advised to create a new Facebook page, maintain it or contact the legal department in Dublin. However, a request from Kouneli Media also remained unanswered.

The situation is exacerbated by the general discussion about freedom of expression and censorship on social media. While Meta's Mark Zuckerberg aims to set the course for greater protection of freedom of expression in the USA, critics in Europe see more and more regulations that could institutionalize censorship. The EU Commission firmly rejects these allegations and emphasizes that the current provisions of the Digital Services Act (DSA) clearly refer to harmful content, but not to content that complies with the law. The right to freedom of expression in Germany is firmly anchored in the Basic Law, especially in Article 5, and should also be taken into account in cases like this, where the line between advertising and censorship is difficult to draw wdr.de.

The closure of the Facebook page not only raises fears that numerous content could be censored by major media outlets, but also puts Playboy's reach development in a different light. While other media such as “Die Zeit” and “Der Spiegel” are losing reach, Playboy is showing increasing values according to the 2024 media analysis, which underlines the magazine’s position in the media landscape.
