Podcast revolution: These top podcasts conquer Germany in May 2025!

The podcast offer in Germany is blooming and addressing a variety of topics, including science, news, films, series, gaming, criminal cases and social trends. On May 28, 2025, the focus is on particularly concise formats in the Hörcharts. According to Dewezet iTunes, among other things, "How was the day, darling?" With Anke Engelke and Kristian Thees as well as "Hotel Matze". Some exciting formats such as "Mixed Hack" and "Murder Lust" also dominate on Spotify.

The use of podcasts has increased significantly in recent years. According to podwatch last year, almost a third of the people living in Germany heard of podcasts, with over 35 % listening regularly in the age group from 16 to 29 years. This growing interest is also evident in the variety of topics and the accessibility of the content, which enable the listeners to integrate podcasts into different everyday activities, be it during sports, cooking or relaxing.

Current top podcasts

Here are the current leaders in the podcast charts:

In Germany, however, there are no uniform standards for the range measurement of podcasts. This makes it difficult to precisely comparisons and data analyzes. While the IAB standard for uniform measurements is used in the USA, the functioning of the iTunes charts remains largely unknown. Rankings are presumably determined by a mixture of subscribers, calls, reviews and downloads. The chart data is updated several times a day.

popularity and future of podcasts

The popularity of podcasts is unbroken. The recent statistics show that in 2024 around 45 % of Germans occasionally use podcasts and the proportion of regular listeners continues to increase. Statista reports that advertising sales in the podcast market in Germany were around 52 million euros in 2023 and could grow up to 67 million euros by 2028.

An outstanding feature of the German Podcast landscape are the different providers. Over 50 % of the listeners use Spotify, while about 41 % YouTube, followed by platforms such as the ARD audio and Amazon Music. The most popular podcast genres are true crime, news and politics.

Overall, the use of podcasts in Germany faces a dynamic development that brings opportunities for new providers as well as challenges in the measurability and comparability of the content.
