The start of the trial against Solingen assassin: five months after the horror!
On May 27, 2025, the trial against the alleged assassin Isa al H., nine months after the terrorist attack by Solingen, begins before the Düsseldorf Higher Regional Court. This attack occurred on August 23, 2024 during the city festival for the 650th anniversary of the city of Solingen. In the bloody act, three people, including two men aged 56 and 67, and a 56-year-old woman were murdered. In addition, ten other people were injured, while two visitors were only narrowly missed by the aggressive approach of the perpetrator.
The prosecutor's charge comprises triple murder and ten times attempted murder. Issa Al H. is classified by the authorities as an IS terrorist who was targeting "unbelievers". IS had complained about the attack one day after the crime. Alt H. had sworn loyalty to the terrorist group shortly before the crime. The process officially started on Tuesday and will continue over 22 days of negotiations by September 24, 2025. A total of around 75,000 visitors were expected for the Festival of Diversity, but it was canceled after the attack, as Tagesspiegel
background of the perpetrator
Issa al H., who was identified as the main suspect of the Solingen attack, had radicalized for years. Research by NDR, WDR and SZ show that he has been looking for IS-KAMBALIDERN and information on the Internet since 2019. He is originally due to Deir al-Sor in Syria before traveling to Turkey and finally in 2022 via Bulgaria to Germany. There he submitted an asylum application, but the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees decided that he had to return to Bulgaria, but this did not happen. Signs of radicalization in his previous life remained undetected, but some of his roommates reported striking behavior. He also founded a Telegram group in February 2024 to distribute IS-related content.
In the run-up to the attack, Al H. exchanged around 60 messages with an IS-related administrator and actively planned an attack. On August 19, 2024, he received a checklist for terrorist attacks via Telegram. Before the crime, he acquired a new knife that he used for the attack. The deed itself took about a minute, while Al H. committed his attack with the exclamation "Allahu Akbar". After the incident, a walker found his jacket with ID documents, which led to the quick identification of Al H.S by the police because a hint of the Turkish secret service was decisive. It was arrested on August 24, 2024 and has been in custody since then.
political and social reactions
The terrorist attack has triggered political discussions in Germany about deportation and internal security. The case is particularly important in the context of the current EU asylum rules, since Al H. 2023 should have been deported to Bulgaria, but could not be found. The influx of migrants and the security situation in Europe are increasingly in public debate. This can not only be seen by the case of Solingen, but is also reflected in the overarching security strategies that are dealt with more strictly by the European Union to prevent such incidents. In this context, Europol has developed instruments to pursue and prevent terrorist content on the Internet, such as the DetailsOrt Solingen, Deutschland Quellen
