Russia sees Germany as the greatest enemy: survey beats waves!

A current survey by the Moscow opinion research institute Lewada shows that Germany is perceived by 55 percent of those surveyed as the most hostile country towards Russia. This represents a significant increase in 40 percentage points compared to May 2020. According to the survey, which was carried out between May 22 and 28, 2025 and 1,613 people over the age of 18, Germany is clearly at the head of antipathic perception among the Russian population. The United States, which has often been seen as enemy in the past two decades, now can be found with 40 percent approval behind Germany, which means a dramatic decline of 76 percent compared to the previous year. The increase in hostility to Germany can also be seen in the context of the tense geopolitical situation in which Russia and the West are located.

Another aspect that public opinion in Germany is is the ambivalent attitude towards Russia itself. According to a survey by the Körber Foundation, this distinction is particularly evident when it comes to perception of Russia's role in international conflicts. The current opinion has changed drastically since 2014 when Russia's military interventions in Ukraine and strategic foreign policy are considered increasing challenges.
