Russia's offensive widens: Sumy and Dnipro under pressure!
Sumy, Ukraine - Russia is currently increasing its offensive in the Ukraine War, especially in the strategically important regions of Sumy and Dnipropetrovsk. According to reports, a new major offensive could be imminent, which puts the Ukrainian armed forces under increasing pressure. The Merkur reports that the regions Sumy and Dnipropetrovsk also have a high symbolic but also strategic value for Ukraine.
The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) has announced that Russian troops could possibly exceed the border between Donetsk and Dnipropetrovsk. In the meantime, Russian military bloggers have documented the progress of their troops near Horichowe, Murawka and Kotlyariwka. A loss of these areas could significantly impair the military defense of Ukraine in Donetsk.
Russian troops move closer
The Russian Ministry of Defense has confirmed that parts of the 90th Panzer division fought out to the western border of the Donetsk region. In addition, photos of Russian troops with a flag in the village of Zorya show that the Ukrainian border is increasingly threatened. According to reports, the Russian armed forces have come to the city of Sumy up to around 30 kilometers, which, when it is close to the Russian border, is of great strategic importance.
In the past few weeks, Russia has taken areas north of Sumy, including Mala Korchakiwka, Warachyne and Chotin. Furthermore, the village of Loknia was recaptured, while the fights continue in Yunakiwka and Yablunwka. So far, the city of Sumy has been spared from a conquest by Russia, but the Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj warns of the threat of about 50,000 Russian soldiers on the border between Kursk and Sumy.
evacuation measures and dangers for civilians
To adjust to the possible offensive, the governor of the region has ordered a mandatory evacuation for more than 11 settlements. A total of 213 cities and villages are already affected. The civilian population in Sumy is faced with a variety of dangers, including possible drone attacks. The flat terrain in this region offer the Russian army advantages for a quick advance.
Overall, the performance and resistance of Ukraine have attracted a lot of attention internationally in this conflict. The Leibniz-Community on the day of the attack on Ukraine, questioned its cooperation with Russia and put it on hold. In this context, support funds for endangered scientists were also published in Leibniz facilities in order to secure their long-term perspectives and the preservation of scientific structures in Ukraine.
The situation in Ukraine remains tense, while international focus is still on the influence of war on peace, security policy and international relationships. Various institutions, including the Leibniz Institute for Eastern and Southeast European Research, deal intensively with the background of the conflict and the consequences that it has for the entire region and beyond.
