Alarming figures: 8,300 young people in Saxony-Anhalt without a job!

Today we are shedding light on an important topic that affects youth and future skilled workers: youth unemployment in Germany. In Saxony-Anhalt, around 8,300 young people between the ages of 15 and under 25 are currently without a job Reporting from the Dubisthalle shows. Although this is 1,000 fewer than ten years ago, the situation is still worrying, especially considering that the proportion of unemployed young people without a vocational qualification has increased from 50% to 78%.

A look at statistics published by the Employment Agency reveals that the number of unemployed young people in West Germany was 193,600 in December 2024, while East Germany reported 59,300. Particularly alarming: 76% of unemployed young people in West Germany and 80% in East Germany had no completed vocational training Institute for Labor Market and Occupational Research (IAB) shows.

The challenges of vocational training

The current figures make it clear that the challenge lies not only in creating new training places, but also in career orientation for students. In 2024, the number of registered training places increased to around 13,000, while the number of applicants for these places fell by 32% over the last ten years. Labor Minister Petra Grimm-Benne makes it clear how important it is that young people come into contact with the topic of vocational training at an early stage.

Another aspect is that 2,000 of the 2,200 unemployed foreign young people do not have a qualification. This is where a training initiative comes into play that specifically targets migrant young people in order to secure the next generation of skilled workers. The “Zukunftsstarter” initiative and the state career orientation program “BRAFO”, which supports around 11,000 students every year, show that there are various approaches to counteract this trend.

Regional differences and their consequences

The regional situation is another point that cannot be ignored. In East Germany, the number of company training places on offer fell drastically from 2012 to 2023. While there used to be 80 apprenticeships for every 100 school leavers, today there are only 63. In the West, however, the ratio has risen from 61 to 100 to 75 to 100, which reflects a positive trend. Nevertheless, the youth unemployment rate in East Germany shows concern for the future of young people. Since 2010, the chances of finding a job without a degree have fallen drastically.

As studies and reports show, young people without a vocational qualification are under pressure, not only in the labor market, but also in terms of their personal development. It is essential to put the fight against youth unemployment in the hands of the general education system, as IAB researcher Holger Seibert emphasizes.

In summary, it can be said that the need for qualified specialists can only be met with a comprehensive strategy in vocational training and individual support for young people. It remains to be hoped that the initiatives and programs will have an impact and that no young person will be lost due to a lack of prospects.
