200,000 euros for the railway line: Aken breathes a sigh of relief - freight traffic is coming back!

The railway line between Aken and Köthen should soon blossom again! The renovation of the 12 kilometer long route, which plays a central role in freight transport, is expected to bring a breath of fresh air to the Aken (Elbe) region. The state of Saxony-Anhalt has provided funding of 200,000 euros for this purpose MDR reported. An occasion presented by State Secretary Sven Haller at the recent port summit in Aken. Mayor Jan-Hendrik Bahn was optimistic about the renovation measures.

The total costs of the urgently needed renovation work amount to 400,000 euros. In addition to the funding from the state, the city of Aken, the district of Anhalt-Bitterfeld, the Hafenbetrieb Aken GmbH and the Bayerische Regionaleisenbahn GmbH (BRE) are each contributing 200,000 euros. This co-financing effort ensures the restoration of traffic safety on the route and supports the region's trimodal connectivity concept.

Look at the history of the route

The challenges are not new: Train traffic was stopped by Deutsche Bahn in 2008 and freight trains have stopped running since the corona pandemic. Many companies in the region have so far had to forgo freight transport by rail, but the return of rail freight transport could soon become a reality. The Hafenbetrieb Aken GmbH has already received requests for the use of the railway line for 29 block trains, among other things.

An important step into the future was taken with the recently submitted funding application for the renovation and the mutual decision of the city council and the port's supervisory board to also support co-financing of 200,000 euros. The application to restore the transport infrastructure was submitted in good time before the deadline of February 28, 2025, which raises hopes of a positive decision by the state of Saxony-Anhalt Mayor Bahn.

The importance of the railway for the region

The importance of infrastructure for the Aken region is emphasized from many sides. The district administrator and managing director of the Bavarian Regional Railway emphasize the regional economic importance and the possibility of shifting more freight traffic from road to rail - an important step for sustainable mobility and economic recovery. Completely in line with the objectives of the Railway Infrastructure Guidelines (EIRili), which promote investments in regional rail freight transport.

The route will not only be important for the region's residents and companies, but also as a strategic hub in regional logistics. One can only hope that the state's financial support dispels any remaining doubts and that construction work can begin as planned in the second quarter of 2026. With its trimodal approach (road, water and rail connections), Aken has a good knack for future-oriented developments, and the city shows that it has its finger on the pulse!
