A problem for the region
In Saxony-Anhalt, especially in rural areas, there are always discussions about medical care. At the most recent district administrators' conference on August 28, 2025 in Gardelegen OT Letzlingen, eleven district administrators came together to talk about the future hospital landscape. Health Minister Petra Grimm-Benne and the Parliamentary State Secretary, Tino Sorge, were also on site. The main theme was the reorientation of medical care in rural areas and the urgent need for hospital reform Altmarkkreis-Salzwedel.de reported.
District Administrator Steve Kanitz emphasized the gaps in outpatient care, because emergency clinics are indispensable, especially in rural areas. Thomas Balcerowski, district administrator of the Harz district, supports the reform with the aim of bundling services at centralized locations in order to increase quality. There is an urgent need for investment support from the state in order not to endanger rural locations.
Local challenges
The dilemma of healthcare in rural areas is well known: While the population expects high-quality healthcare services, they often struggle with long journeys to the nearest facilities. Loud bpb.de There are significantly fewer health care facilities in rural areas compared to urban centers. This means that older people in particular, who need more medical and nursing support, are increasingly disadvantaged.
But it's not just physical stress that's an issue; Access to special services such as pediatricians is also often limited. In the eastern federal states, numerous children and young people live far away from the nearest specialist practices. As a result, they go to the doctor less often and are therefore reliant on primary care physicians who often cannot provide the specialized care that is needed.
The discussion about innovative care models is therefore more topical than ever. Telemedicine, mobile healthcare providers and collaborations between different healthcare professions could significantly improve the situation.
For many it is clear: targeted reform and the involvement of the population are essential in order to maintain optimal health care in the Altmark. The exchange in the above-mentioned project could be an important step in making citizens' voices heard and developing concrete solutions.
