What's going on in Saxony-Anhalt in summer? There is news from the 2024 bathing season for all swimming enthusiasts and sun worshipers. The Klietz bathing lake in the Stendal district can start the bathing season as normal, despite initial concerns about a “poor” classification. In order to prevent a permanent bathing ban, measures such as clearing ditches and the planned renaturation of the reed belt were taken, as MDR reports.
Another bright spot when it comes to bathing waters is the Pappelgrund family and natural pool in Teutschenthal, which is starting the season with a new operator and name. This was particularly important because the seaside resort had previously had to close due to lack of management. The opening brings a breath of fresh air to the region and promises a wonderful swimming experience for the whole family.
Bathing ban at Horseshoe Lake lifted
The city of Halle has made it clear that there is no prospect of general approval for swimming. The bathing ban was originally introduced because of health risks that can be traced back to contaminated sites from the industry. Nevertheless, improving water quality is a welcome step in the right direction.
Health risks when bathing
But we shouldn't just worry about the good or poor quality of bathing water. Swimming in natural waters can also pose health risks. The Umweltbundesamt points out that a variety of uses and changes can influence the occurrence of bacteria that are harmful to health. For example, high levels of fecal bacteria may indicate the presence of pathogens that can lead to infectious diseases.
These risks increase particularly after heavy rain events - due to combined sewer overflows from sewage treatment plants or runoff from agricultural areas. Despite these challenges, statistics show that in 2023, 97.9% of all bathing water in Germany met EU quality requirements.
In conclusion, it can be said that many swimming spots can start the new bathing season as quickly as possible, but you should certainly have a good hand when choosing the bathing locations and looking at the water quality. Health authorities recommend only using officially designated seaside resorts that are regularly inspected. This will be ensured by regular water samples until September 15th.
