Bathlake Klietz starts season despite defects - where can you swim?

What is happening in Saxony-Anhalt in summer? For all swimming enthusiasts and sun worshipers, there is news from the 2024 bathing season. Despite the initial concerns about a "poor" classification, the Klietz bathing lake in the Stendal district can start regularly into the bathing season. In order to prevent a permanent bathing ban, measures such as the clearing of the ditches and the planned renaturation of the reed belt were taken, as MDR.

Another ray of hope for the bathing waters is the family and natural pool Pappelgrund in Teutschenthal, which starts the season with new operators and names. This was particularly important because the seaside resort had to close due to a lack of management. The opening brings a breath of fresh air for the region and promises a nice bathing experience for the whole family.

bathing ban on the Hufeisensee canceled

Tagesschau

The city of Halle has made it clear that a general release is not in prospect for bathing. The bathing ban was originally introduced due to health risks that are due to contaminated sites from industry. Nevertheless, improving the water quality is a gratifying step in the right direction.

health risks in bathing

But not only about the good or poor quality of the bathing waters, we should worry. Bathing in natural waters can also recover health risks. The [Federal Environment Agency] (https://www.umweltbundeamt.de/daten/umwel indicator/indikator-badegewaesserqualitaet) indicates that diverse uses and changes can influence the occurrence of health-threatening bacteria. For example, high concentrations of faecal bacteria can indicate the presence of pathogens that can lead to infectious diseases.

These risks increase in particular after heavy rain events - through mixed water overflows from sewage treatment plants or downsizing from agricultural areas. Despite these challenges, the statistics show that in 2023 97.9 % of all bathing water in Germany met the quality requirements of the EU.

Finally, it can be said that many swimming points can start the new bathing season as soon as possible, but should certainly have a good hand when choosing the seaside resorts and a view of the water quality. The health authorities recommend only using the officially designated seaside resorts that are checked regularly. This is ensured by regular water samples by September 15th. So - for an early, refreshing summer!
