Employment in Saxony-Anhalt: Magdeburg is growing, districts are declining!
The economic situation in Saxony-Anhalt is becoming increasingly challenging. As the Magdeburg News reported, the number of employed people fell by 2.9 thousand to 993.5 thousand people in 2023, which corresponds to a slight decrease of 0.3%. This development can be observed primarily in the rural districts, where employment fell by 4.0 thousand people (-0.6%), while the independent cities recorded an increase of 1.1 thousand people (+0.4%). This is an encouraging ray of hope in the midst of an overall stagnating development.
There were positive effects particularly in the cities of Magdeburg and Dessau-Roßlau. In Magdeburg, employment rose by 0.7% and in Dessau-Roßlau by 0.4%. Halle (Saale), on the other hand, recorded an almost unchanged situation. Unfortunately, there is also less good news: the highest loss figures were recorded in the Burgenland district and the Altmark district of Salzwedel, with declines of 1.7% and 1.6%.
The services sector remains strong
In 2023, an impressive 72.9% of the workforce in Saxony-Anhalt were employed in service professions. The front runner is Halle (Saale) with 88.6%, followed by Magdeburg with 87.3%. In comparison, the proportion in Anhalt-Bitterfeld is the lowest at 63.4%. Marginal employment also remains an issue; In general, 7.8% of employees were in this position. The highest rate of marginal employment can be found in the Altmarkkreis Salzwedel at 9.4%.
The proportion of self-employed people and family members helping out is 7.7%. It is noteworthy that the self-employment rates in the Altmarkkreis Salzwedel, Mansfeld-Südharz and Stendal are each 9.3%, while in Halle (Saale) and Magdeburg they are only 5.9% and 6.1%.
Rising unemployment is damaging the labor market
The situation is further underlined by rising unemployment. The Employment agency reports for July 2024 that the number of unemployed rose to 85,800, an increase of 4.1% compared to the previous month. The unemployment rate is now 7.7%. What is particularly worrying is that the number of long-term unemployed people has increased to 32,300, putting the proportion of long-term unemployed at 37.7%.
Young people are also affected: almost 9,000 unemployed people under the age of 25 have to find their way in the current situation, which corresponds to a rate of 9.0%. What is particularly noticeable here is that 1,000 young adults registered as unemployed after completing their training or studying. The labor market is extremely tense, despite many vacancies.
The training market shows light and shadow
There are over 8,600 applicants looking for training positions for this year's training period. In July 2023, 2,200 of them were already without a training place or alternative. In addition, a total of 11,000 training positions were reported, which is 800 fewer than in the previous year. Freelancers in the scientific and technical sector and the service industry in particular are confronted with the challenges.
The current situation in Saxony-Anhalt is a reflection of the overall economic developments, which bring with them both opportunities and challenges. Even if the numbers of employed people in cities seem positive at first glance, the question remains as to how long- and short-term unemployment can be countered in order to find sustainable solutions.
