Holiday apartments in the GDR border tower: history meets vacation on the banks of the Elbe!
A former border tower on the banks of the Elbe in Cumlosen, Brandenburg, is currently providing a breath of fresh air in tourism. The old watchtower from GDR times is being transformed into an extraordinary place by Lutz Lange, a hotelier and restaurateur from Wittenberge. The aim is to set up a total of four holiday apartments there. Under the motto “Sleep in a historical ambience”, both tourists and locals will in future have the opportunity to sleep in history and enjoy the view of the water at the same time. This reports Radio SAW.
Lutz Lange spent a lot of money. He paid 156,000 euros for the property, which is 3,683 square meters. The total costs, including fees and property transfer tax, amount to around 180,000 euros. The renovation costs are estimated at an additional 250,000 to 300,000 euros. Lange has already contacted an architect from Perleberg to plan the conversion of the tower to its advantage.
Highlights of the project
A viewing platform will be set up on the top floor of the tower, offering guests a fantastic view. As a special highlight, an exhibition on the GDR border regime is planned, the exhibits of which will come from the Blue Light Museum in Beuster, Saxony-Anhalt. The historic building, which was completed in 1984, was once an important command post and was in service with the border troops until the fall of the Berlin Wall.
In addition, the roof area of the tower will be opened so that the spotlights and even a crane system are retained. These elements are intended not only to show the history of the tower, but also to make your stay a unique experience.
Attractions around the tower
The area around the border tower also has a lot to offer. Located directly on the Elbe cycle path, guests can use rental bikes for exploration tours and rent boat trips or stand-up paddling boards at the nearby Cumlosen Elbe harbor. Lange plans to integrate these activities into its offering to make the stay unforgettable for its guests.
The development of the border tower is also important in light of the upcoming 2027 State Garden Show in Wittenberge. The aim is to complete a large part of the renovation work by the opening of the event. This innovative project can not only make the history of the GDR tangible in the region, but also provide new tourism impulses. An exciting time lies ahead and we are excited to see how the project develops. There is also more information about this Mirror Online.
