Burn garden waste correctly: tips and regulations for Salzwedel!
The autumn season is a real joy for many gardeners. But be careful when it comes to getting rid of the leftover garden waste! From October 1st to November 15th, 2025, certain plant waste may be burned in the region, such as the city of Salzwedel reported. This happens within the framework of strict guidelines that are intended to protect the environment on the one hand and ensure a regulated procedure on the other.
It is regulated in detail that burning is only permitted on private residential properties and in allotment gardens. Industrial and commercial areas as well as public green spaces are excluded here. These measures are based on the provisions of the Circular Economy Act, which ensures that vegetable waste should primarily be recycled, for example through composting.
Important regulations for burning
Garden waste may only be burned if this is necessary for phytosanitary reasons or because composting is not possible. What is particularly relevant is that only plant waste generated on one's own property may be set on fire. There are clear guidelines here - the size of the fire should be a maximum of 1.5 m x 1.5 m base area and 1 m high.
But it doesn't stop there: The burning must take place under the constant supervision of an adult and the place may only be left when the fire has completely gone out. In addition, a minimum distance of 10 meters from buildings and property boundaries must be maintained - in kindergartens, old people's homes and schools it is even 100 meters. A distance of 30 meters applies to forests. These regulations are essential in order to exclude the risk of endangering the general public Wikipedia holds on.
Be careful with the weather conditions
A point that should not be underestimated is the weather - in forest fire danger levels 4 and 5, burning is completely prohibited. Burning may also not be permitted in certain weather conditions, such as strong winds or high humidity. Here the gardeners are required to have a good hand and to time it just right so that they don't cause any harm.
