Culture boom in Saxony-Anhalt: 3 million euros for creative projects!
In a welcome turn for the cultural scene in Saxony-Anhalt, the federal government has launched a total of 30 cultural projects in rural regions of Germany and two of them will receive a hefty financial injection of 1.5 million euros each. The funding comes from the “Aller.Land” program, which specializes in strengthening culture and citizen participation in rural areas. So it is not surprising that the Altmarkkreis Salzwedel and the Wittenberg district were selected as the recipients of this support. According to n-tv, Minister of State for Culture Wolfram Weimer emphasizes the need for a diverse cultural offering.
The establishment of a decentralized youth art school is planned for the Altmarkkreis Salzwedel. This will offer creative spaces for children in four different places in the region and thus make a significant contribution to cultural education. In the Wittenberg district, however, the “Kobra” cultural network is being launched, which will offer interesting exploration tours of local buildings and landscapes. Artworks, photos and texts will be presented in the form of a digital map and exhibition to keep cultural heritage alive and accessible.
Creative participation
The projects are intended not only to promote local cultural wealth, but also to set an example for the solidarity of the population. Through the program “Aller.Land – shaping together. Strengthening structures.” An incentive is created to actively participate in events in one's own communities. The aim is to motivate people to creatively shape their living environment and, in particular, to include underrepresented groups such as young people, older citizens or people with disabilities. An overview of funded projects shows that the projects are community-building, locally anchored and regionally oriented - exactly what the region needs today. The initiators report that responding to current local challenges is a central component of the planned projects, as can be found on Aller.Land.
A particularly popular format is art and village residencies, where artists work with villagers to work on regional themes. The opening of museums and theaters to co-creative processes has also proven to be successful and enables the development of new cultural formats. These projects have the potential to create meeting places where citizens can shape and have a say in their own decisions.
The way into the future
The entire funding program provides funding totaling 45 million euros for the years 2025 to 2030. The Federal Agency for Civic Education contributes to the costs and the federal states provide co-financing of ten percent. This solid financial basis will enable the regions to develop viable concepts for innovative and participation-oriented projects, which were approved in the first half of 2025. As part of the first phase of the program, which was started in 2023, 97 regions received funding of 40,000 euros each to go through the first development phases, as Minister of State for Culture informed.
It remains to be seen how the economic and cultural structures in these regions will develop, but one thing is certain: the projects contribute to sustainably enriching cultural life in rural areas - and perhaps a new, creative chapter will soon be opened in the cultural history of the Anhalt region.
