Mercedes crash in Salzwedel: mother with children suffers shock!

There was a spectacular accident in Salzwedel this morning around 6:27 a.m. that caused excitement in the Wilaya Altmarkkreis. A 36-year-old driver of a Mercedes was driving on Gardelegener Straße when she went too far to the left and hit two parked cars. The total damage is estimated to be in the mid-five-figure range, and all three affected vehicles were no longer drivable after the incident. Fortunately, the two small children who were in the driver's car were uninjured. Nevertheless, the driver suffered a shock and had to be cared for, as Tag24 reports.

But that wasn't the only incident in the region. On Monday there was another accident in the An der Altmarkpassage parking lot in which an 86-year-old driver of his BMW pressed the accelerator pedal too hard while reversing. First he collided with a parked Skoda, then he hit a street lamp and was then thrown into a Toyota. The BMW even flipped over onto its driver's side, damaging another Toyota. The elderly man was slightly injured and had to be taken to Salzwedel Hospital for treatment. The police estimate the damage here to be in the low six-figure range, and both the BMW and a Toyota suffered total economic loss. Details about this accident are provided by az-online.

Accident statistics in Germany

The latest accident figures from Germany shed light on the increasing problem of road safety. There were around 2.5 million road traffic accidents in 2023, with most accidents only resulting in property damage. However, the number of fatal accidents shows a worrying trend: there were 19,193 traffic deaths in 1970 and 2,839 in 2023. This also makes it clear that despite all efforts to improve road safety, such as the EU's “Vision Zero” goal of no more road deaths by 2050, the downward trend in road deaths has slowed. In the European Union, 46 out of a million inhabitants died in 2023, and in Germany it was 34. These numbers are linked to common causes of accidents such as insufficient distance, inappropriate speed and driving under the influence of alcohol, as can be read on Statista.

Especially in view of the increasing number of e-bikes and e-scooters, which are increasingly contributing to accident statistics, it remains to be seen what measures will be taken to improve safety. The number of people injured or killed on e-bikes increased from 2022 to 2023, showing that although these modes of transport are popular, they also carry some risk.
