Mercedes driver in flames in Salzwedel: police are looking for witnesses!
A burning Mercedes causes a stir in Salzwedel. On Wednesday evening, more precisely at around 11:25 p.m., the fire brigade and police were called to the street “Am Stern”, where a devastating scenario took place. When the emergency services arrived, the engine compartment of the car was already fully engulfed in flames. A VW parked next to it also suffered significant damage from the heat. The fire department had its hands full and was ultimately able to bring the fire under control and extinguish it. The damage caused is estimated at a four-digit amount, informed Day24.
This incident isn't the only thing that's putting the fire department to the test. On Saturday evening at 11:45 p.m., an Audi and a Mercedes burned down in front of a Greek restaurant on Hansestrasse, which prompted several callers to alert the control center. When the police arrived, the Audi was already on fire, and the fire quickly spread to the Mercedes, three trees and an adjacent gazebo. As a precaution, the police evacuated the residents of the surrounding houses, but fortunately no one was injured. The total damage amounts to around 50,000 euros. Here too, the criminal police are not ruling out arson and are continuing to investigate. Information can be given to the police on 03901/84 80 People's voice reported.
Arson as a problem
The incidents highlight a recurring problem in some cities. In the past, there have been repeated reports of vehicle fires that may have been caused by arson or vandalism. It is increasingly being observed that such fire-setting is not only done out of pure destructiveness, but can also be linked to political motives or extremism, as an article by RBB24 shows.
The Salzwedel police are therefore asking the public for help. Anyone who has made suspicious observations in the area or can provide information about the fires should definitely get in touch. Ultimately, such acts must be dealt with decisively. So that the streets are safe again.
