Neptune Energy is allowed to encapsulate the Brüchau hazardous waste landfill – protest expected!
In the Altmark district of Salzwedel, an important decision was recently made to renovate the Brüchau hazardous waste landfill. Operator Neptune Energy Germany has received approval to leave and encapsulate waste on site. This development leads to heated discussions, especially from the citizens' initiative Clean Environment & Energy Altmark and the district, which are calling for the waste to be completely excavated and disposed of externally. To express their protest, a demonstration is planned for the coming weekend.
How Euwid Recycling reports, the State Office for Geology and Mining (LAGB) has approved the request for changes to Neptune's final operating plan. There were no reasons for failure in the legal and technical examination. The intended content of the plan is that the dumped waste will be safely contained. This includes upgrading the geological barrier and a sealing system that meets the legal requirements for landfill class III.
The plans and measures
Neptune has already considered the detailed planning and plans to begin operational work immediately. The measures, which are due to be completed by 2028/29, are expected to cost around 32 million euros. Financing is secured thanks to contractual arrangements with Saxony-Anhalt. The deposited mining waste is to be conditioned and returned to the facility, with dismantling of the technical facilities and recultivation of the area also planned.
The citizens' initiative, which strongly criticizes the approval for encapsulation, fears that this could lead to tensions between the population and the landfill operator. “The LAGB has clearly taken the wrong path here,” says Christfried Lenz, a representative of the initiative. There is also the possibility of challenging the approval decision at the Magdeburg Administrative Court within a month, which could further fuel the dynamics of the discussions.
Background to the Brüchau landfill
The landfill in Brüchau is a legacy from the GDR era and was closed down in 2012. The new encapsulation plans now bring to light both old and new concerns raised by both environmentalists and citizens. The issue of waste disposal and its consequences remains an emotional and important concern in the region, which will continue to be a topic of conversation until the plans are finally implemented.
Nowadays, this topic shows once again how important it is to have discussions about the environment and health. In view of global environmental crises and the increasing awareness of the population, voices against such plans are not only popular locally, but also nationally.
