Renovation of the Brüchau landfill: €32 million for a secure future!

The Brüchau landfill in the Altmarkkreis Salzwedel is about to undergo a comprehensive renovation that will significantly improve safety standards. Total costs of around 32 million euros are estimated, with the State Agency for the Exemption from Contaminated Sites initially planning to cover the entire cost. But the German Press Agency reports that the state authority will ultimately only cover 26 million euros, while the rest will have to be covered by the operator Neptune Energy Deutschland. A share of 20 percent was negotiated with Neptune, which is surprising according to Jürgen Stadelmann, managing director of the state agency. This distribution of costs represents a new chapter for the controversial landfill, which emerged from a former clay pit and served as a storage site for residues from natural gas production and hazardous industrial waste.

The State Office for Geology and Mining of Saxony-Anhalt (LAGB) recently approved the change to the final operating plan, which is the starting signal for the renovation. Comprehensive measures are planned to encapsulate the waste, which should ensure long-term security of the deposit. The aim is to permanently isolate the source of pollutants from the soil and groundwater. For this purpose, stable barriers are built that prevent contact between pollutants and the environment. The implementation takes place in several construction phases, including the relocation and professional disposal of third-party deposits as well as the creation of a base seal and surface covering as a new security system. Once the work is completed, the Brüchau facility will be one of the most modern locations with the highest safety standards in Germany.

Renovation within the framework of the highest safety standards

The idea of renovating former landfills pursues an important goal: restoring and securing contaminated sites. According to the experts at Umfis, landfill remediation is a comprehensive process that requires various measures. This includes soil renovation, surface sealing and gas drainage systems. These responsibilities are important not only for environmental protection, but also for the health of people in the surrounding area. With the approval of the LAGB, the course is now set for the renovation of the Brüchau landfill, which is considered a clear example of successful renovation.

Another plus: financing for the renovation measures has been secured and the work should be completed by 2029 at the latest. The LAGB's decision can be appealed for up to a month after it is announced, but the hope is that these environmentally friendly measures will be implemented soon.

Interestingly, the landscape of landfill remediation in Germany is rapidly changing. In addition to safety measures, many operators rely on innovative approaches such as setting up solar parks on former landfills, which not only reduces the ecological footprint but also contributes to sustainable energy consumption. The situation in Brüchau impressively shows how modern technologies and comprehensive planning have to go hand in hand in order to create sustainable solutions.

Euwid Recycling and Neptune Energy provide information about progress as the project becomes more concrete and the region can hope for a more environmentally friendly future.
