Dryness in Saxony-Anhalt: Water removal from today severely restricted!

Dessau-Roßlau, Deutschland - The persistent drought in Saxony-Anhalt has now led to strict water withdrawals. According to MDR, water withdrawals from rivers, streams and ponds are prohibited from today in the district of Mansfeld-Südharz. Similar regulations in Dessau-Roßlau also apply, where the same measure will come into force from July 1st. Bans have previously been imposed in the Altmark district of Salzwedel and Jerichower Land.

The restrictions are not only limited to the water withdrawal: the waterfield-Südharz district also means that the irrigation of green spaces and sports facilities between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. The only exceptions apply to agricultural companies that have a water law permit.

dryness and lack of water

The causes of these measures are worrying: The groundwater level in the district have fallen among the several years of mean values, which requires the authorities to make this decision. The neighboring district of Harz has also taken similar steps and limits the water withdrawal from surface waters and groundwater, reports n-tv. Therefore, the residents are asked to save water to protect the resources.

The low water levels in the rivers are also remarkable: the Elbe has reached a critical water level of only 56 centimeters in Dresden, for example. Germany stands in front of a heat wave that could rise up to 39 degrees on Wednesday. According to NZZ, spring 2025 has been one of the driest since the beginning of the weather records in 1881, which further tightened.

consequences for agriculture

The dry damage also affects agriculture. The Saxony-Anhalt Farmers' Association already reports the first losses in the diesel quantities required for irrigation. This could have a negative impact on the grain harvest, even if the forecasts for a stable harvest listen to around 40 million tons. The varying yields due to the different water storage in the soil could still lead to difficulties.

The situation remains tense, because in other districts such as the district of Stendal are similar measures in preparation. However, there are currently no restrictions in some regions such as Anhalt-Bitterfeld and the Börde.

The risk of forest fire has also increased significantly due to the dry weather. In the resin, steam locomotives from danger level 4 must be replaced by diesel locomotives. In addition, the fine for smokers was increased to 250 euros during the higher risk of forest fires in order to set a sign and to sensitize the population.

In these challenging times, it is important that citizens adhere to the new regulations to protect the water resources together and to preserve nature.
