Storm alarm in Saxony-Anhalt: thunderstorms and hurricane gusts are threatening!

Summer is showing its unpleasant side - the German Weather Service (DWD) has declared a severe thunderstorm for Saxony-Anhalt for today, Thursday, June 26, 2025. The federal states must prepare for strong thunderstorms that will hit the country with full force in the afternoon and evening. The DWD warns of hurricane gusts and severe thunderstorms specifically for the regions of Altmarkkreis-Salzwedel, Salzlandkreis, the districts of Stendal, Börde, Harz, Jerichower Land, Anhalt-Bitterfeld, Wittenberg and the state capital Magdeburg. These warnings are in effect until 5:30 p.m., and until then citizens are urged to be particularly careful.

What exactly is threatening? The prospects are anything but rosy. During the thunderstorms, gusts of up to 105 km/h are expected. Even in the southerly area, the wind is gusty with speeds of up to 55 km/h. The DWD also draws the public's attention to the dangers of lightning strikes and falling trees, which definitely should not be underestimated. In addition, high-voltage power lines and scaffolding could pose a risk, while falling branches and roof tiles can also cause potential damage to buildings. This is how the Süddeutsche describes the warnings very clearly.

Heavy rainfall on the way

The rainfall is also tough. According to the DWD, up to 30 liters per square meter are possible within a short period of time. Even 20 liters in half an hour would not be atypical, which could lead to local flooding. Hail with diameters of up to 2 cm could make things worse. These thunderstorms move dangerously quickly across the country in the evening, according to the MDR weather warnings reporting on the current situation.

In addition, a little cloudy sky in the afternoon will almost feel like a calm before the storm. The thunderstorms are expected to move eastward during Friday night. Nevertheless, due to the slight improvement in the weather given the low pressure influence, gusty winds of around 55 km/h from the southwest can also be expected in the south. Gusts of between 65 and 85 km/h are even forecast on the Brocken from midday today to midday on Friday.

Next update

According to 14-tage-wettervorhersage.de, there will be a new update of the weather situation by 8:30 p.m. this Thursday at the latest. Those responsible leave no doubt that all citizens should be well prepared for the upcoming weather events.

It remains to be seen whether summer can settle in at a slow pace. What is certain, however, is that the weather gods are planning a very special spectacle in Saxony-Anhalt today - a good reason to take a look out of the window and perhaps take a few precautionary measures. Keep the doors and windows closed and be careful! Stay safe!
