Caution: Driver flashes cyclist due to sun glare!

On Saturday morning, a serious accident occurred between a car and a cyclist in Jävenitz, in the Altmarkkreis Salzwedel. Loud DAY24 The 52-year-old driver was driving her Mazda on the B188 and wanted to turn left on Lindstädter Straße towards Jäskau around 7:20 a.m. She was blinded by the low sun and overlooked the 67-year-old cyclist who was riding on the bike path. The cyclist sustained serious injuries in the collision and had to be taken to hospital immediately. Luckily she was wearing a helmet, which probably prevented more serious consequences.

The damage to the car amounts to a four-digit amount. The driver is now being investigated for negligent bodily harm. Although such accidents are not common, statistics show that traffic accidents involving cyclists are increasing. Road traffic is becoming more and more dangerous, and not just in connection with collisions. A current study by insurers' accident research (UDV) indicates an alarming increase in cycling accidents, particularly in the winter months.

Bicycle accidents are increasing

How daily news reported, around 27,400 cyclists had accidents in 2023 without any external influence, which clearly shows that many of these accidents can be attributed to the weather and inadequate infrastructure. Almost every second cycling accident that results in serious injuries is a single accident. This can be attributed, among other things, to the increasing popularity of cycling. Older people in particular are increasingly turning to bicycles and are often faced with inadequate infrastructure.

According to UDV, the most common sources of danger are curbs and tram tracks, while bollards, poles and signs rarely play a role. For cyclists who use Pedelecs, the consequences of accidents are even more serious. These wheels accelerate faster and are heavier, making them difficult to handle.

Road traffic statistics

The data from kfz.net show that an average of ten people die in traffic every day in Germany. The decline in traffic fatalities in recent years is encouraging, apart from the increasing number of accidents. However, the number of cyclists killed is a warning sign: over 393 cyclists lost their lives in traffic in 2016. One in eight dead road users was a cyclist. Inattention and drunk driving play a significant role in the causes.

What is particularly worrying is that older road users are often more severely affected by accidents. A third of traffic fatalities were 65 years of age or older, although the consequences of accidents are often more serious in this age group.

In order to increase road safety, many cities and municipalities offer measures aimed at improving the infrastructure. Awareness for other road users, especially cyclists, urgently needs to be raised as far as road safety is concerned.
