Water shortage in Baden-Württemberg: Watering bans affect many areas
In the Altmarkkreis Salzwedel, there have been bans on pouring well water during the day since June 23, 2025 in order to combat water shortages.

Water shortage in Baden-Württemberg: Watering bans affect many areas
The sun is beating down mercilessly and temperatures are exceeding 30 degrees - summer 2025 will be at its hottest across Germany. But the joy of the beautiful weather is clouded by a worrying development: watering bans are already in force in many regions due to the ongoing drought. So reported Stuttgart News that the Esslingen district in particular has issued a ban on taking water from rivers, ponds and lakes until August 31st.
The situation is worrying. More and more circles are following suit to counteract the falling water levels in bodies of water. In Stuttgart, for example, extraction from public waters is only permitted with a permit, and anyone who does not comply with this must expect fines. Similar regulations also apply in the Böblingen district, where the ban applies from June to the end of September. These measures have also arrived in North Rhine-Westphalia: restrictions have already been imposed in the Rhein-Sieg district and in Bonn.
Water withdrawal restricted in Saxony-Anhalt
Saxony-Anhalt is also not spared from this drought. Here, the municipalities have already made comprehensive regulations regarding water withdrawal. In the People's voice it says that the withdrawal of water in the Altmarkkreis Salzwedel and in other districts for irrigation purposes is prohibited during the day. The cities of Burg, Gommern and Genthin in Jerichower Land have issued watering bans, while in Dessau-Roßlau, irrigation of gardens and sports fields is restricted from July to September. A general ban on watering also applies in the Mansfeld-Südharz district between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m.
Rising temperatures of over 35 degrees also mean that watering in regions without a ban only takes place in the early morning or evening. There is increasing focus on water withdrawal from rivers, lakes and streams as water levels remain alarmingly low. The German Weather Service (DWD) reports that this drought is the worst since 1931, and this is also affecting soil moisture, which is severely affected in many parts of Germany.
Background and outlook
Climate change is also showing its effects here: like that Federal Environment Agency shows that rainfall in Germany has fallen dramatically in recent months. March 2025 was the sixth driest since 1881, which has a massive impact on agriculture and vegetative development. Farmers in particular are looking at the dry fields with concern because sustainable irrigation is becoming increasingly complicated.
In order to conserve water resources, careful use of water is required. The National Water Strategy is intended to ensure sustainable use of water. Citizens are advised to pay attention to the essentials when watering their gardens and to choose suitable times in order to save valuable resources.
The development remains exciting - more than ever before we have to ask ourselves how we can deal with the scarcity of water. Only if we all act wisely and responsibly can we perhaps escape the water crisis.
