Customs in action: Dangerous human trafficking networks exposed!
Last week, the Magdeburg main customs office impressively highlighted the problem of human trafficking and forced labor. From September 22nd to 28th, Europe-wide control days were held that were specifically directed against these serious human rights violations. Not only were numerous companies checked, but the working conditions of the employees were also closely examined. That's what she reports Borken newspaper that 69 customs officers worked in 17 companies, including restaurants, agriculture and construction.
The results of the inspections were alarming. In the sectors examined, there were increasing signs of violations of residence law, which resulted in a total of ten criminal proceedings being initiated and the same number of proceedings for administrative offenses. These measures are part of a broader strategy to combat human trafficking and forced labor, which is given high priority by the Federal Government and the Federal Criminal Police Office Federal Criminal Police Office explained.
The phenomenon of human trafficking
Human trafficking is a complex and frightening reality that often takes place in secret. People in this country are regularly forced into exploitative working relationships. Victims are often deceived by the promise of a better life or well-paid work, only to be forced into precarious conditions. This mostly happens in work areas such as construction, care and transport. These practices not only pose a danger to those affected, but also pose a challenge to the authorities as many victims are afraid to come forward. The number of unreported cases is high, as is the case BMAS emphasized.
Current initiatives such as the National Action Plan against Labor Exploitation and Forced Labor (NAP A/Z) and the National Action Plan against Human Trafficking (NAP MH) aim to improve conditions for workers and prevent abuse. The NAP A/Z, which was approved by the federal government in February 2025, includes 83 measures to promote information offerings and raise awareness among authorities and companies.
The role of customs
Since the introduction of new competencies, customs has taken on a crucial role in the fight against human trafficking by working closely with other authorities and institutions. This also includes financial investigations and the possibility of confiscating criminally acquired funds in order to deter potential perpetrators. “The strengthening of financial controls on undeclared work has led to more cases of labor exploitation being solved,” explains a customs spokeswoman.
Another important aspect is international cooperation, be it through organizations such as the ILO or through membership in Alliance 8.7. These efforts show that Germany takes the fight against human trafficking and forced labor seriously and wants to provide a lasting service to these social challenges. Because one thing is clear: a joint effort from all actors is required to take action against these serious human rights violations.
In conclusion, customs controls are only a small part of a larger puzzle that we must solve together in order to decisively combat human trafficking and forced labor. Every step in the right direction counts!
