Flowering oases: Enthusiastic day of open gardens in Saxony-Anhalt!

On Sunday, June 16, 2025, the “Open Gardens” campaign took place in Saxony-Anhalt, which was very popular. The garden of Christiane and Karl-Heinz Thinibel in Berkau near Bismark was particularly the focus. For over 30 years, the Thinibels have been living in their 2,500 square meter garden, which once served as a kit for tobacco and cucumbers. In the GDR they kept over 100 chickens. After the turn, however, they suffered from the decline in demand for their products and decided to restructure their garden.

Instead of the previous crops, a flowering oasis was created, in which only small areas are used for vegetables. The Thinibels have been part of the "open gardens" campaign for ten years and have already welcomed up to 400 visitors to one of the opening days, which resembled a joyful village festival. On this occasion, the hosts surprised their guests with delicious coffee and homemade cakes, whereby the proceeds went to the support association of the Berkau kindergarten.
