Danger of field fire in Halle: Fire brigade fights the flames!

At a sweltering 38 degrees Celsius, a field fire broke out in Landsberg near Spickendorf and Petersdorf on the hottest day of the year. Loud MZ The fire quickly spread to two more fields and moved dangerously towards the village. Over 50 firefighters are currently on a large scale to stop the impending disaster, which was probably caused by flying sparks from a combine harvester.

The situation in Landsberg is worrying. There have already been 34 fires here this year, including seven vegetation fires. With the current incident, the number of forest and field fires has increased to the level of the entire previous year. Last year there were at least 34 fires, with the peak figures in the region occurring in 2018 and the following years with up to 42 fires per year.

Forest fire warning levels are increasing

The current forest fire warning level is particularly alarming: level 4 has been declared for Halle and the Saale district, while neighboring districts have already reached the highest warning level of 5. The Dölauer Heide, the largest forest area in Halle, is particularly at risk due to a high proportion of coniferous wood and the large amount of dead wood. In order to get the fires under control, large annual exercises to fight vegetation fires were held in Halle two years ago. Training courses also take place regularly to ensure that the emergency services are optimally prepared.

To further support the firefighting, the city of Landsberg has purchased a new fire engine with an impressive 9,000 liter tank. This shows forward planning, which is essential at a time when wildfires are becoming more common due to climate change. Statista points out that Germany has been increasingly affected by forest fires in recent years, particularly due to long periods of drought and heat.

Appeal to the population

In this serious situation, farmers and walkers are called upon to act considerately. Open fires and carelessly left-behind rubbish can have fatal consequences and further aggravate the already tense situation. The fire department strongly advises that you take all precautionary measures. Everyone can help prevent fires.

Awareness of the danger of forest and vegetation fires should not be taken lightly. Even if the number of forest fires in Germany in 2023 was significantly lower compared to the previous year, how Weatherhazards.de reported, the threat of fire-related land loss and associated negative environmental and public health impacts remains.

In recent years, over 1,200 hectares of forest area across Germany have been destroyed by fires, with over 3,000 hectares in 2022 being the highest in the last 30 years. The forest fires are not only a threat to flora and fauna, but also to the people in the area.

In a climate increasingly characterized by extreme weather conditions, it is absolutely necessary to take measures to prevent future fires and make optimal use of existing resources.
