Criticism of the CSD in Köthen: Stands under pressure, security at risk!

In Köthen the anticipation of Christopher Street Day (CSD) is palpable, but the event budget is causing discussions among the organizers. How MDR reported, the organizers criticized the decision that information stands must be subject to a content review. According to the organizers, this could lead to pressure being put on initiatives whose stands are perceived as not being politically sufficient.

A concern that not only affects the organizers, but also many CSD participants: protection and security at such events. Despite the anxious feelings and the real threat of attacks on homosexuals, like esquire reports, CSD demos give many a feeling of belonging. Here, like-minded people often feel safer to take a stand against the prejudice and hatred they are exposed to.

Requirements and security

In order to make the event in Köthen safe and compliant at the same time, specific guidelines were given: The information stands must serve the political motto of the CSD and should be placed in less frequented locations. So, a double burden for the organizers. A spokesman for the city of Köthen emphasizes that a “good compromise proposal” was found for the plans. The proposed structure is considered the “best possible scenario” in order to meet the requirements of the approval authority.

Cultural and social exchange should be promoted, even if it remains unclear who ultimately decides whether a stand meets the requirements or whether it may have to be dismantled. It is precisely this uncertainty that could ultimately increase the pressure on the participating initiatives.

Responsibility for human rights

And while the CSD is making its preparations, the responsibility of companies is also taking center stage. The United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, which have existed since 2011, are an important reference point for social justice and sustainability in globalization. These principles require states and companies alike to protect human rights and grant recognized rights to civil societies, even if the state itself is not obliged to do so. The CSDDD (Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive) plays a key role here, obliging companies throughout the EU to respect human rights and identify and address risks throughout the entire value chain CSR in Germany executes.

For the people who are determined to come to the CSD, this is more than a demonstration for their rights. It is a powerful expression of togetherness, against discrimination and for fundamental acceptance in society. However, the preparations in Köthen show that getting there will not be problem-free.
