New hope: Biotech company Campo Amargo opens plant in Bitterfeld
The biotech company Campo Amargo has opened a new production facility in the Bitterfeld-Wolfen chemical park. This not only stimulates the regional economy, but also serves a niche market that is becoming increasingly important. The company invested four million euros in the renovation of an existing property, which has now been expanded to 1,800 m² of production space and a total of 7,360 m² of total space. Special chemicals for artificial genetic material are to be manufactured locally, which is seen as a crucial step by the industry, especially as demand for these products increases worldwide. But what exactly is produced here?
The new facility will focus on the production of specialty reagents for synthetic DNA and RNA fragments used in diagnostic and therapeutic medicine. In addition to the technology, the creation of up to 19 new jobs is also announced. To this end, production capacities are to be further developed in two expansion stages. “There is something there,” says Uwe Möller, Managing Director of Campo Amargo GmbH, and points to the excellent infrastructural conditions at the Bitterfeld-Wolfen location. In his opinion, the company has shown a “good hand” by investing in this region. Furthermore, Dr. Derek Levinson, also managing director, said the facility is flexible and can quickly adapt to growing demand.
Location advantages of Bitterfeld-Wolfen
The decision for the Bitterfeld-Wolfen location is not a coincidence. In her speech, Stefanie Pötzsch, State Secretary in the Ministry of Economic Affairs, emphasized the strategic importance of the settlement for the entire region and the chemical industry. The chemical park, which is home to more than 360 companies, not only offers an excellent infrastructure with technical service, but also a close-knit network for companies. A 20-kilometer-long pipe bridge network ensures optimal connections to Leuna and Schkopau, while Leipzig/Halle Airport and numerous research institutions are nearby.
Mayor Armin Schenk sees the opening of Campo Amargo GmbH as a benefit for the city and a clear signal of the attractiveness of the location. The district administrator of Anhalt-Bitterfeld, Andy Grabner, emphasizes that the settlement represents a vote of confidence in the local economy. The chemical park itself wants to continue to grow through this innovation and establish itself as an attractive location for biotechnology companies.
Future outlook
With the commissioning of the new production facility, Campo Amargo is taking a significant step towards the future. As the demand for genetic material continues to increase, the company will do everything it can to become the market leader in this area. The signs are currently good for the region, and the cooperation of all those involved promises to continue the success story in the Bitterfeld-Wolfen chemical park. The name Campo Amargo not only reflects the connection to the region, but also the commitment to developing innovative solutions in the biotechnology sector.
A ceremonial commissioning took place on June 17, 2025, to which numerous media professionals were also invited. “Something is growing here that radiates beyond the region,” is how Möller puts it, making it clear that good news from Bitterfeld-Wolfen will not only cause a stir locally, but also internationally. If everything goes according to plan, this location could soon become an important hub in biotechnology.
