A dramatic traffic accident on the A44 motorway caused a stir on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, near Soest. At around 5:10 p.m. there was a serious incident at the Soester Börde Süd rest area, between the Soest and Soest-Ost junctions. A driver lost consciousness while driving, causing his Mercedes with a caravan to drive uncontrollably and shoot into the bushes. Who would have thought?
Luckily, first responders were there immediately, including a construction worker who called 911. In addition, the vehicle's automatically installed emergency call assistant reported the accident to the rescue control center. The fire brigade, rescue service and police then moved out to free the injured occupants. But the rescue was anything but easy - the passenger side of the car had to be cut open with heavy equipment. The fire brigade even felled small trees for this purpose.
Presence of mind co-driver
The passenger, who had the presence of mind, steered the vehicle into the bushes to prevent further accidents. Both occupants, a couple from Essen, were finally freed from the vehicle. The woman was taken to the Marien Hospital in Soest, while the driver had to be treated in the hospital. According to initial findings, a medical emergency is suspected to be the most likely cause of the accident. Fortunately, their lives were not in danger, but they did suffer injuries.
This is not the first serious accident to bring the A44 into focus. Just a few months ago, on October 25, 2023, another serious traffic accident occurred (more on this at calf ). A VW van rammed a truck in the fast lane at high speed. The two occupants of the van suffered life-threatening injuries, but were rescued after intensive rescue efforts.

These incidents create a huge gap in road safety awareness. According to the latest statistics from the Federal Statistical Office Traffic accidents are a serious issue. The results not only provide an overview of the factors that determine accidents, but also form the basis for legislative measures to improve road safety. Accidents resulting in personal injury are recorded in detail in order to counteract the high risk in road traffic and to develop preventive measures.
It remains to be hoped that unpleasant incidents like the one on the A44 will decrease quickly. Attention and caution in road traffic are essential to minimize the risk for all road users. Every second counts and you never know when something unexpected will happen.
