Burglary and fire cause excitement in Haldensleben!

In the early morning of June 20, 2025, shortly after 4 a.m., unknown perpetrators tampered with a shopping branch in Altenweddingen. They forced entry through the front door and stole numerous cigarette packets from the checkout area. Witnesses reported two dark-clothed, masked men running across a parking lot toward the escape site. The Haldensleben police used a tracking dog, but unfortunately these efforts yielded no further information about the perpetrators sachsen-anhalt.de reported.

On the same night there was also a violation of the Animal Protection Act. The police secured a dog in Haldensleben while action was taken against the owner, who is already being investigated for animal welfare violations. On June 16th he is said to have kicked and beat his dog on the street in Wolmirstedt. The dog's health is now being checked at an animal shelter while the police consider further measures under the Animal Welfare Act.

Terrifying fire hazard

At another location in Haldensleben, a fire was reported in an empty apartment building on June 19, 2025 at around 8:30 p.m. When the emergency services arrived, the building was already fully ablaze. Despite rapid intervention by the fire brigade, the house could not be saved and was completely destroyed. The damage caused is estimated at 130,000 euros. Fortunately, there were no injuries, but ten residents had to be evacuated briefly but were able to return after the firefighting efforts were completed. The investigation into the cause of the fire is still ongoing and there is currently no information as to what happened sachsen-anhalt.de reported.

The number of unreported cases of burglaries and other crimes is difficult to estimate. According to an analysis of various statistics, which also looks at the number of burglaries in Germany, the total number of residential burglaries fell from 459 per day in 2015 to 149 per day in 2021. This number is partly attributed to the Corona crisis, as many people work from home. But despite the decline, the burglars' original loot remained largely constant, a trend that is also reflected in the current situation in Haldensleben.

Break in numbers

Here is a brief overview of the break-in situation:

  • 2021 wurden bundesweit 54.236 Einbrüche verzeichnet
  • Durchschnittlicher Schaden pro Einbruch stieg auf 3.100 Euro
  • Aufklärungsrate bei 19,5 Prozent, variiert je nach Bundesland

Despite the lower numbers, the fear of burglaries is noticeable among the population. Urban areas close to the population are particularly affected, with most break-ins occurring during the day between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. The loot often consists of cash, jewelry and electronics - smartphones and laptops are particularly popular, while televisions are rather unpopular for practical reasons as they are too large to transport quickly.

The police are appealing to citizens to be vigilant and to report suspicious observations in order to prevent a further increase in such acts. Residents who noticed something suspicious in the early hours of the morning are asked to contact the Haldensleben police on 03904/478-0.
