A wave of thunderstorms is rolling towards Bavaria – there is a threat of heavy rain and hail!

A changeable weather pattern is emerging in Bavaria today, July 19, 2025. As tz.de reports, the sunny summer weekend ends with violent thunderstorms in some regions. The districts of Donau-Ries and Dillingen an der Donau are particularly affected, where the German Weather Service (DWD) is issuing specific warnings.

From the afternoon onwards, a thunderstorm front will move into Bavaria from the southwest. Heavy rain and gusts of between 60 and 80 km/h are to be expected. The DWD is also warning of small-grain hail today. According to the DWD, rainfall can reach up to 20 l/sqm locally, while up to 40 l/sqm is possible in the second half of the day. It could be particularly uncomfortable in Munich and other cities in the evening, as the thunderstorms could last into the night.

Weather warnings and forecasts

The warning situation is also characterized by fog in the north this morning. From the afternoon onwards, temperatures may rise due to moist air, which leads to unstable weather conditions and can cause local storms. According to wetterfähren.de, gusts of up to 70 km/h are also possible, especially in the Alps and the southern foothills of the Alps, where gusts of up to 85 km/h are possible.

The various thunderstorm warnings are listed on an interactive map from Unwetterzentrale. This division shows both advance warnings and acute warnings in different color codes. In the event of unexpected thunderstorms, warnings are categorized from yellow to purple in order to inform the population in good time. The meteorologists regularly adjust these warnings so that current developments can be tracked.

Outlook for the week

The current dynamic weather situation also looks ahead to the coming weekend. The DWD is predicting a possible heat wave with temperatures of up to 40 degrees in Germany, while Bavaria can expect average temperatures around the mid-30s. So let's see how the situation develops in the next few days - because the fluctuations in the weather can also throw the Cologne residents' plans into disarray.
