Art meets Queenness: Submissions for Ephemeres Archive in Weimar!

Universitätsbibliothek Weimar, 99423 Weimar, Deutschland - Today, on June 2, 2025, finds on the Pride Week and the Summaery2025. As part of this event, an innovative project is presented that deals with the visualization of queer knowledge and personal experiences. The project is entitled "Ephemeres Queeres Archive" and is developed in the "Queering Spaces" course.

The aim of the project is to present the diverse aspects of queer identities and realities of life to a wider audience. Artistic contributions are in demand in transparent acrylic boxes that can be submitted by Thursday, June 12, 2025. The work should not contain liquids or organic substances and may not exceed a maximum size of 32 × 24 × 10 cm.

inspiration by José Esteban Muñoz

The concept of the project is based on the theories of the influential queer theoretics José Esteban muñoz . He criticized the contemporary gay and lesbian policy and expanded the discussion about queer identities by seeing them as something that is "not yet here". Muñoz asked to understand queerness beyond the limits of identity policy and to consider it a way of hope and an aesthetic dimension.

Under the premise "Ephemera as Evidence", Muñoz emphasized the importance of transient performance that leave permanent traces and reformulate our understanding of matter. His theories on "DisidentIficatory Performances", which act as transgressive acts, were also inspiring to articulate truths about cultural hegemony for racial and sexual minorities. These approaches offer a fertile framework for the contributions in the archive project.

creation of a queer space

By addressing books and own queer memories, the submissions to the "cruise" of the library stock are to invite. In a society that often holds up the standards of heteronormativity, the project aims to dissolve familiar categories and create a space for alternative forms of expression. The examination of one's own experiences and the connection to neighboring works opens up new perspectives.

muñoz’s work not only influenced queer theory, but also shaped discourses in the areas of performance studies and the Latina/O identity. His book "Cruising Utopia" addresses the relationship between queer art and utopian future visions. It contains numerous essays and examines how the historical and cultural dimension of queer identities can be formable.

The University of Weimar invites you to actively participate in this inspiring project and make queer feminist art accessible to a general public. It is a way to raise your own voice and become part of a transformative movement.
