Cranach-Triegel Altar: Dispute in Naumburg Cathedral finally ended!

The dispute over the Cranach-Triegel Altar in Naumburg Cathedral is finally over. After a long process, UNESCO experts have decided that the altar should be removed from the west choir and placed at another location in the cathedral. This reports domradio.de. The new location in the transept of the cathedral was approved by the United Cathedral Donors and representatives of monument preservation. The decision follows a judgment that was received by the state government and thus provides great clarity.

The move to place the altar in the west choir has already been criticized several times. The UNESCO experts argue that the visibility of the impressive donor figures, especially the fascinating Uta von Naumburg, is impaired by the altar. The altarpiece by Lucas Cranach the Elder, which was completed in 1520, and the middle section, which was added by the Leipzig painter Michael Triegel in 2020, should now be presented in a worthy setting that does justice to its historical significance. This leads to an important clarification, which was also very much welcomed by Minister Rainer Robra. naumburger-dom.de confirms the approval by UNESCO, which will come into force from July 2025.

The path to the new location

The discussion about the best location for the altar in Naumburg Cathedral dragged on for several years. Experts feared that inappropriate placement could jeopardize the cathedral's World Heritage status. Naumburg Cathedral received coveted World Heritage status in 2018, and this was called into question by the placement of the altar in the west choir. mdr.de informed that UNESCO used a technical assessment from a report by the International Council on Monuments and Sites (Icomos), which was prepared in June 2022.

The interest in the altar and its extensive restoration demonstrate the cultural value associated with this work of art. The masterpiece was originally created between 1517 and 1519 by Lukas Cranach the Elder, but was partially destroyed in 1541 during the Reformation. With the addition of Michael Triegel, the work of art was able to take on a fuller shape again.

Outlook for the future

The United Cathedral Donors plan to exhibit the Cranach-Triegel Altar again in the west choir of Naumburg Cathedral from December 2023 to July 2025, before it finally moves to the north transept. The clear decision about the new location not only brings relief for the responsible authorities, but also ensures the appreciation of this extraordinary work of art.

The coming years will show how the new installation will affect the perception of the cathedral. What is certain is that the altar will play a central role in Naumburg Cathedral in the future, without overshadowing the unique donor figures.
