Rapid water extraction bans: Saxony-Anhalt is fighting against drought!

The ongoing drought in Saxony-Anhalt is showing initial effects that are severely restricting water availability. From June 23rd, watering gardens and sports facilities with well water will be prohibited between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. In the Altmark, the authorities have imposed strict bans on the withdrawal of water from rivers, ponds and lakes in order to keep the water balance stable. This reports MDR.

The situation is tense, especially in the Altmarkkreis Salzwedel, which is examining further steps to save water. The Stendal district is also in contact with the water authorities to discuss possible restrictions on the use of drinking water and the irrigation of public areas. While the water levels in Stendal are currently within the normal range, water levels are expected to fall in the coming weeks.

Regional differences and challenges

At the same time, the situation in the Salzlandkreis and Burgenlandkreis districts remains stable, and there is currently no need for action there. Historically, such water withdrawal bans have also affected other regions such as the Jerichower Land or Anhalt-Bitterfeld in recent years, indicating longer trends of water scarcity. It remains to be seen how the current drought will affect agriculture. According to the Saxony-Anhalt Farmers' Association, drought damage has already occurred in cereals such as wheat, barley, rapeseed and rye, while vegetables such as sugar beet, corn and potatoes have so far been less affected.

In order to meet the long-term challenges of drought, the Federal Environment Agency is conducting research as part of the project “Impact of climate change on water availability – adaptation to dryness and drought in Germany” ( UBA ). The aim of this project is to provide a comprehensive picture of current and future water availability under climatic changes. The knowledge gained will be used to develop solution strategies to avoid the various water use conflicts in Germany.

A look at shipping shows that traffic on the Saale was not affected by the drought in May, as the lock and dam system in Halle ensures a constant water level. Despite these developments, general water scarcity remains a major challenge that could have strong regional impacts People's voice informed. It is recommended to have a good handle on water and to adhere to the new regulations in order to use water as a resource responsibly in the long term.
