Tony Cragg delights in Dessau: Skulptures in Georgium Castle - tangible!

Schloss Georgium, 06844 Dessau-Roßlau, Deutschland - The Georgium Castle in Dessau is currently becoming a shop window of contemporary art. Today, on June 21, 2025, an impressive exhibition by the renowned British sculptor Tony Cragg opens, which will be shown until October 5, 2025. Visitors can look forward to a variety of Cragg's sculptures that represent three decades of his creative work and are exhibited not only in the castle, but also in the surrounding park and in the orangery. This show is a real feast for the eyes and focuses on perspectives and spaces in a fascinating way, a central element in Cragg's works.

The highlights of the exhibition include two huge, silver columns placed at Georgium Castle. These sculptures seem to be in motion and reveal the faces from different perspectives. What is special here is the largest sculpture that measures almost seven meters and belongs to the “Points of View” group. The bronze sculpture “We” is made up of hundreds of self -portraits of the artist and the sculpture “Manipulation” shows two large hands from which many small hands grow. These pieces illustrate Cragg's examination of the human form and individuality.

Details about the exhibition

The exhibition is divided especially in the neutral, white space of the orangery and in the historical premises of the castle as well as in the extensive park. Interested visitors can admire the impressive outdoor sculptures around the clock, while the works of art in the castle are available during the regular opening hours of the permanent exhibition. The orangery is open daily from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., but it remains closed on Tuesdays. A special offer: With a regular entry ticket, visitors also have access to the special exhibition at no additional surcharge. The state of Saxony-Anhalt supports this exciting show that creates the dialogue between modern and historical art.

A historical wall mirror in the garden hall of the castle reflects the sculptures and changes their effect in an exciting way. CRAGG is known for its variety of materials, which ranges from wood, steel and bronze to synthetic resin. He creates both abstract and realistic works. The exhibition is not only a selection of sculptures, but also a complete examination of the material world and its new meanings.

artistic influences and perspectives

inspired by natural forms, human facial features, geological formations and cell structures, Tony Cragg offers a wide range of works of art that encourage both the imagination and to think about the space and our perspective. These tensions between the figuration and abstraction led him to the top of the "art compass", where he took fifth place last year.

The exhibition is not only limited to Dessau. In Darmstadt in the “Spanish Tower” sculpture garden, ten works by Cragg can be seen, which are exhibited until the end of October. These works of art installed with cranes are in sight of important historical monuments and expand the cultural landscape of the city. These two exhibitions form an exciting axis and enable visitors to reflect and enjoy the perspectives between different art locations.

The exhibition in Dessau is an excellent opportunity to experience CRAGG's unique vision of art, which is becoming increasingly important both in the regional art scene and beyond. The visit is not only free of charge for the sculptures in the park, but also an invitation to deal with art and the search for new perspectives in a constantly changing world.
