Father sentenced to over nine years in prison: hundreds of times the torment of children!

In a shocking verdict, the Dessau-Roßlau regional court convicted 65-year-old Jürgen H. of hundreds of cases of sexual abuse of his own children. The man now faces a prison sentence of 9 years and 6 months. The court found that H. was responsible for 158 cases of serious sexual abuse and almost 170 other abuses that occurred between 2002 and 2010. The children, who are now adults, filed a criminal complaint against their father last year and were present when the verdict was announced, which makes the seriousness of what happened all the more clear. As Bild reports, Jürgen H.'s downfall was his abusive actions that took place in the family environment, several times a week when his mother was not at home.

The court classified what happened between the walls of the apartment building on August-Bebel-Platz in Dessau-Roßlau as particularly bad. The son was only 13 years old at the time of the crimes and the daughter was just 9. Jürgen H. vehemently denied the allegations and justified his behavior with his alcohol addiction, which has existed for 50 years. He claimed that no child had ever slept in his bed and described his hugs as fatherly. However, such statements could not invalidate the many incriminating evidence, as MDR highlights.

Long-term consequences for the victims

The severity of the crimes left deep scars on the victims. According to the court, the two children still suffer significantly from the consequences of the abuse and need therapeutic support. Her courageous step in filing a complaint was not only intended to bring her father's abusive behavior to account, but also to send a signal that such crimes will not be ignored.

In connection with this case, it is important to highlight another point. The Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) pointed out in a recent press release that the increase in sexual violence against children has reached alarming proportions. In 2023, 16,375 cases of child sexual abuse were recorded, an increase of 5.5% compared to 2022. What is particularly worrying is that many perpetrators are family members or close acquaintances of the victims, which makes the abuse particularly dramatic for those affected.

An appeal to raise awareness

Practice shows that the perpetrators often come from the children's immediate environment, which makes prevention and education an important topic in our society. Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser has pointed out that 54 children and young people in Germany become victims of sexual abuse every day. Greater attention to the problem is necessary to prevent such tragedies in the future. The issue requires solutions for society as a whole, especially in the digital space, where the dangers are increasing due to renewed criminal offenses such as cybergrooming or live distance child abuse on the Internet.

Jürgen H. has been in custody since October and the verdict is not yet final as an appeal is possible. It remains to be hoped that those injured can receive the necessary support and healing through legal action and the aforementioned social awareness-raising.
