Dow closure in Schkopau: 600 jobs at risk - what now for the region?

In a worrying development, the US chemical company Dow has announced the closure of production parts at its plants in Schkopau (Saxony-Anhalt) and Böhlen (Saxony). By the end of 2027, this will affect a total of 600 employees, including 100 in Schkopau. This move is making waves in the region following the closures of chlor-alkaline and vinyl plants. These factories play a crucial role in the regional economy, and the word “closure” causes worried faces among many of those affected, as MDR reports.

Dow's current closure plans are the result of structural problems in the European market, high energy and operating costs, and declining demand in key industrial sectors. Works councils at both locations recently met with representatives of the economic ministries and chemical associations to develop ideas for the continued use of the locations without Dow, as Halle Spektrum describes.

Focus on existing jobs

Dieter Macke, the chairman of the works council, leaves no room for illusions when he emphasizes that these closures are unavoidable. Instead of turning things around, the focus is now on securing and creating new jobs. “We have to find partners who can plan sustainable production such as hydrogen or hydrochloric acid synthesis,” emphasizes Macke, pointing out the importance of these raw materials for the chemical industry. The economic feasibility of such concepts is currently being examined.

The closure announcement is perceived as a warning signal for the entire region. Dow, a major employer in the Saalekreis, has announced that it will adjust capacities to minimize trading risks and remain competitive. It remains to be seen how the state government of Saxony-Anhalt will react to this situation, as no official statement on the factory closures has yet been published. Trade unions and works councils are urgently calling for a “rescue dialogue” between the state, federal government and top management in order to find possible alternatives to the closure.

The future of works

While other production sectors in Schkopau, Leuna and Böhlen will remain intact for the time being, the future of the affected facilities remains uncertain. The closures are not only a personal tragedy for the employees affected, but also have an impact on the entire region, which relies on the chemical sector. The ongoing challenges in the industry show that there is a need for action to ensure long-term competitiveness.

The coming months will decide whether and how the region can respond to this difficult situation. It remains to be hoped that through the efforts of works councils and unions, solutions will be found to save jobs and create new perspectives.
