Naturalizations in Saxony-Anhalt are increasing: Syria at the top!

In 2024, Saxony-Anhalt recorded a pleasing increase in naturalizations. A total of 2,813 people received German citizenship, which corresponds to an increase of 34.3 percent or 718 people compared to the previous year. The gender distribution is also revealing: 1,572 men (55.9%) and 1,241 women (44.1%) were naturalized last year. The majority of the new citizens come from Asia - no fewer than 1,920 people, which corresponds to a share of 68.3 percent. There are also 622 people from Europe and 139 from Africa. What is particularly striking is the number of Syrians, who are clearly at the top with 1,468 people, even if the increase was lower compared to the previous year (of 1,405 people) - here the growth was 4.5 percent.

Countries of origin and age distribution

The most common other countries of origin are Ukraine (162 people), Russia (134 people) and Afghanistan (101 people). In total, people with 92 different nationalities were naturalized. The age distribution shows that almost a third of naturalized people - 822 people (29.2%) - are under 18 years old. 954 people (33.9%) belong to the age group between 18 and 35 years, while 642 people (22.8%) are between 35 and 45 years old.

The legal provisions for naturalization were widely used. 1,408 people (50.1%) acquired citizenship according to Section 10 Paragraph 1 StAG, which requires a period of residence of five years. In addition, 862 naturalizations (30.6%) were carried out as co-naturalizations in accordance with Section 10 (2) StAG.

Geographical distribution of naturalizations

Saxony-Anhalt's largest city, Halle (Saale), leads the statistics with 601 nine-state citizens, followed by Magdeburg with 576 and Dessau-Roßlau with 166 naturalizations. The districts are also showing interesting development. In the Altmark district of Salzwedel, 63 naturalizations were recorded, while the Burgenland district welcomed 198 new citizens. The Harz district is particularly outstanding with a fantastic increase of 438.1 percent, followed by the Börde with 422.2 percent.
