A serious incident occurred on Tuesday morning in Osterwieck, Saxony-Anhalt: significant amounts of arsenic leaked from a company. Loud star Arsenic was discovered in the form of powder and granules in the immediate vicinity of the company premises. The alerted emergency services were able to identify nine locations where they were found or where they had escaped. A break-in at the factory that produces high-purity metals for the chip industry could have been the cause of the massive release of the toxic heavy metal. The police in Magdeburg reported that an unknown amount of chemicals was released during the break-in.
Around 150 emergency services, including hazardous goods specialists and the environmental agency, were on site to contain the hazardous substance. The area was cordoned off and the public was urged to call 112 if they saw chemical substances or strange containers. Fortunately, there are currently no reports of injuries, but the district has classified the situation as a major disaster, reported NDR.
