Brocken-Bahn is taking a break in November: stay informed now!

When it gets cooler in November and the fog rolls over the Brocken, one thing is clear: the popular Brocken railway is taking a break. The reason for this is extensive maintenance work on the route network of the Harzer Schmalspurbahnen GmbH (HSB), which is using this time to bring the famous means of transport back into shape. The break takes place on weekdays, while on the weekends the trains continue to take rail fans and hiking enthusiasts from Schierke to the summit of the Harz as usual.

The maintenance work will take place in several construction phases: from November 3rd to 6th, November 10th to 13th, November 17th to 20th and November 24th to 27th. There will be no trains running between Schierke and the Brocken during these periods. Train services will also be suspended between Wernigerode, Drei Annen Hohne and Schierke in the second and third weeks of November. However, there is an alternative for passengers: they can use the Harzer Verkehrsbetriebe (HVB) bus line 264 to still get to the popular hiking areas.

A look at the Brocken

The Brocken, which at 1,141 meters is the highest point in the Harz and northern Germany, also has a lot to offer for hikers and nature lovers. With its subalpine climate and distinctive microclimate, it attracts numerous visitors every year. The autumn atmosphere is characterized by the typical foggy days, which occur here up to 300 days a year. This makes this place particularly attractive for those who want to experience the extraordinary flora and fauna - comparable to Scandinavia and the Alps.

The area is also rich in history: legends about witches and devils surround the Brocken, which is mentioned in Goethe's “Faust”. The creation of the Brocken Railway in 1899 represented a significant step in making it easier for visitors to access this impressive piece of nature. Today the narrow-gauge railway takes passengers up to a height of 1,125 m, where the impressive panorama unfolds.

Long-term conservation measures

The current maintenance work is part of a larger plan to maintain the over 140 kilometer long route network. Improving travel comfort plays a central role here. In addition, the maintenance not only affects the Brocken Railway, but also the Selketalbahn and the Harzquerbahn between Ilfeld Neanderklinik and Drei Annen Hohne. The Nordhausen – Ilfeld Neanderklinik section, however, remains in operation as scheduled.

The impressive landscape and the opportunity to experience these magical places up close ensure that both locals and tourists have a good hand when choosing the Brocken for their excursions. Despite the temporary restrictions, guests can be sure: HSB will ensure that the path to the Brocken will soon be accessible again without any problems.
