An unforgettable adventure: Harz hike with Günther in a wheelchair!

An exciting discovery tour for fairytale and legend lovers is in full swing in the picturesque Harz Mountains. Carsten Kiehne, a passionate storyteller, has been collecting stories that make up the irresistible magic of this region for over a decade. Together with his partner Manuela Petri, he has already published more than thirty books that document the rich storytelling traditions of the Harz Mountains. News38 reports that Kiehne also offers guided tours and hikes to bring the stories of the Harz region to life.

A special event took place on Tuesday, March 4th, when Kiehne initiated a hike at the Paracelsus Harz Clinic in Bad Suderode. He met the older man Günther, who, despite his limitations in an electric wheelchair, was determined to undertake the three-hour tour with the steep climb to the clinic. Kiehne was initially skeptical as to whether Günther could overcome the challenge, but the old man beamed with confidence.

Shared experience in the mountains

The group set off, and Kiehne soon noticed that Günther was having difficulty maneuvering his wheelchair up the steep mountain. But the hikers showed great solidarity and helped the older gentleman with their combined strength, which posed a real challenge. After a strenuous effort, they finally reached the summit, and Günther was overjoyed to have finally reached their destination. Kiehne described this experience as one of the highlights of his successful 14-year career as a hiking guide.

The Harz, a highland area in northern Germany, extends across parts of Lower Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia. At an impressive 110 km long and 35 km wide, it is a truly magnificent destination offering endless opportunities for hiking and exploring. The region is known for its varied geology, which is characterized by base-poor rocks such as slate and granite. Wikipedia states that The highest peak, the Brocken, is an impressive 1,141.1 meters high and is a popular destination for mountain lovers.

Rich history and breathtaking nature

The rich history of the Harz is inextricably linked to mining, which dates back to the Bronze Age. The mining of silver, copper and other mineral resources has shaped the region for centuries. Britannica describes the diverse nature of the area, which is home to over 5,000 animal species, including the Eurasian lynx, which was reintroduced after its extinction in the 20th century.

Although the Harz has its challenges, particularly due to the often harsh weather conditions, it offers an unparalleled experience for nature lovers and history buffs. Tourism has established itself as an important industry, allowing visitors to enjoy its captivating stories and breathtaking scenery.

In many corners of the Harz there are well-preserved raised moors, which are the result of the last ice age, and numerous historical cities that are worth exploring. The Harz narrow-gauge railways also offer a romantic opportunity to explore the surrounding area and experience the stories of this unique region up close.
