Geological expeditions in the Harz: Discover 1000 years of mining history!

Anyone interested in the exciting geology of the Harz can look forward to special excursions! The GeoPark Nordic Stone Kingdom in Kehrsen has two events on offer that are aimed at laypeople interested in geology. Here you can learn a lot about the impressive history of the origins of this region.

The first excursion will take place from August 8th to 10th in the Altenau region. The participants immerse themselves in over 1,000 years of mining history, explore dumps and learn everything about water management and the fascinating Harz rocks. The Harz is known for its silver deposits, and the excursion will take place at selected geotopes that, thanks to their special features, offer deeper insights into the history of the earth. A truly educational excursion awaits participants!

The next steps in October

For everyone who feels a sense of adventure in October, there is a second excursion to the Treseburg region from October 3rd to 5th. This consists of a mix of car excursions and hikes. Quarries and outcrops are visited, which impressively illustrate the history of the earth. The topics range from marine deposits to the Devil's Wall to Bodetal and the Krockstein marble. A highlight is the limestone quarry near Rübeland, which shows the remains of a former tropical reef.

In addition, a hike through an ancient magma chamber from Treseburg to Thale is offered. An active quarry north of the northern edge of the Harz fault shows impressive overturned Upper Jurassic layers with a dip of about 70° to the south. Anyone who is enthusiastic about such geological wonders has come to the right place.

Here you can not only admire the deep valleys and romantic waterfalls, but also explore the traces of earlier mining activities.
