A significant step has been taken for tourism on the Brocken in the Harz district. The district recently signed a purchase agreement for land and buildings on the Brockenkuppe. The planned investments are intended to significantly improve the infrastructure on the Brocken plateau. The goal is to significantly increase both the offering and the quality for visitors. The redesign is expected to not only increase comfort, but also attract new groups of visitors. Over the years, the mountain region has developed into one of the most popular tourist attractions and attracts numerous hikers and day trippers every year with its picturesque nature and exciting history.
A place full of history
The Brocken has a long history as a destination for hikers. Famous personalities such as Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Otto von Bismarck have been coming to the highest peak in northern Germany for centuries. The first tourist infrastructure was created in the 18th century with the “Cloud House” from 1736. The development continued with the first observation tower around 1800 and was further advanced by the construction of the Brocken Railway, which has been using steam locomotives to the summit since 1899, describes the Resin Life.
In the impressive exhibition of the Brockenhaus National Park Visitor Center, which is located at the summit, guests can find out about the fascinating myths and legends surrounding the Brocken. The multimedia adventure trip extends over three floors and also highlights the eventful history of the mountain as well as the biotopes and biodiversity in the Harz National Park. Highlights include the listening stations from the GDR era and the associated hands-on stations on espionage and surveillance, such as Harz National Park explained.
Sustainable development and natural use
Efforts to ensure sustainable use of the Brocken are in full swing. Nature conservation also plays a major role here, as the area is part of the European NATURA2000 network. This step of being taken over by the district could also make a valuable contribution to the ecological preservation of the area. The focus is not only on tourism development, but also on the renaturation of former military installations that have shaped the landscape in recent decades.
It remains to be seen what future development will look like in this impressive region. However, thanks to the takeover and the planned investments, the prerequisites for a positive tourism and at the same time environmentally friendly future on the Brocken are in place.
