On November 6, 2025, the city of Osterode am Harz revived its annual honor for athletes and teams. Every year, athletes who achieve top positions in official competitions regulated by generally recognized professional associations can be honored. But it's not just outstanding placements at district and state championships that count - successes at North German and German levels or participation in European or world championships are also criteria for submission. In addition, the performance of teams that advance beyond the district level or score points in relay championships at cross-district level is recognized.
Suggestions and criteria
The athletes must be a member of a club based in Osterode am Harz or have their main residence there. To submit a proposal for the honor, the public is encouraged to use an online form that will be available at the beginning of the next submission period. Each submission must be accompanied by meaningful evidence of sporting success, be it through club confirmations, certificates or press reports.
A selection committee consisting of representatives of the district sports association, members of the city administration and a parliamentary group member from each party represented in the Osterode city council will decide on the awarding of the prizes. The commission not only chooses a male and female athlete of the year, but also a team. In addition, a youth prize is awarded to honor particularly promising young talent.
