Osterode celebrates new sports facility: a meeting place for all generations!
On September 27, 2025 the time had finally come: the modernized sports facility was officially opened in Osterode am Harz. Mayor Jens Augat emphasized that this place is a real meeting place for young and old. The celebrations coincided with a vibrant sports weekend celebrating the diversity of sporting opportunities in the city. The new conditions have already been very well received at the International Savings Bank Meeting for Athletics and at the exercise camp.
After more than a year of intensive use and extensive renovation work, the Jahnstadion now shines in new splendor. The modernization not only included the renewal of the running track on the A pitch, but also the conversion of the natural grass pitch on the B pitch into high-quality artificial turf. On the C pitch, the heavily used artificial turf was completely replaced. In addition, there were new floodlights and a modern drainage system, which not only improved the infrastructure, but also significantly optimized the training and competition conditions.
Financing and grants
The financial resources for this extensive modernization come from the federal program “Renovation of municipal facilities in the areas of sport, youth and culture” (SJK), which has been aimed at improving municipal sports facilities since 2016. Loud bmwsb.bund.de By 2021, 904 projects had already been funded with almost 1.5 billion euros, with the focus on energy-saving renovation.
In Osterode, the total gross costs of the measure amount to 2,850,000 euros, of which the federal government provides a maximum of 966,000 euros as funding. Such projects are receiving new impetus, especially in light of the recently announced “sports billion” that will be available in 2026 for the renovation of municipal sports facilities. This was decided by the coalition factions in the budget committee, and by 2021, around 645 million euros in funds had already been made available for a further 222 projects, such as zeit.de informed.
Appreciation and outlook
The official opening received a lot of praise from guests from politics and sport. Bundestag member Frauke Heiligenstadt announced that from January 1, 2026, the flat rate for trainers and volunteer work will be increased, which should further reward voluntary work in sports clubs. Alexander Saade, another speaker at the opening ceremony, emphasized the central importance of this sports facility for the entire community.
After all of these developments, one thing is certain: the new facilities create optimal training and competition conditions all year round - regardless of the weather and even in the evenings. Thanks to the tireless commitment of supporters such as the federal government, the state of Lower Saxony and local clubs, Osterode can not only promote the quality of sport, but also strengthen the community.
