Smoking ban on Harz narrow-gauge railways: fine increases to 250 euros!

From July 1, 2023, a stricter smoking ban will come into force for the Harz Narrow Gauge Railways (HSB), which applies not only to trains, but also to all platforms. How news38 reported, the fine for violations will be increased significantly - from 60 euros to an impressive 250 euros. This drastic increase, more than quadrupling the previous penalty, is intended to send a clear message of consideration and safety.

Why does the smoking ban have to be taken so seriously? The answer to this is simple: the Harz is particularly susceptible to fires, and with this measure the HSB hopes to prevent forest and vegetation fires. HSB has also begun to equip its steam locomotives with modern safety systems, which are regularly checked to ensure fire safety. Train controllers and additional security guards are also on duty on the Brockenbahn to monitor compliance with the smoking ban.

Reconnaissance and surveillance

The HSB constantly informs travelers about the smoking ban through announcements, signs and posters. Frequent violations are often only punished with warnings, although an exact number of violations is not available MDR reported. The aim of the HSB is not only to punish, but also to provide information about the impending dangers of forest fires caused by smoking.

“Smoking is an addiction that makes smokers nervous in certain situations,” says the HSB in its communication. Nevertheless, compliance with the ban should not represent a major hurdle, but rather contribute to the safety of everyone. The restrictions apply to all forms of tobacco products, including e-cigarettes and vapes, affecting a wide range of users.

Comparison with other countries

In Germany, health protection is regulated at state level and there are different approaches to the issue of smoking bans. In some federal states there are stricter regulations than in others. Federal states such as North Rhine-Westphalia rely on strict bans without exceptions, while 13 other federal states have more generous regulations, as shown in the overview Wikipedia shows.

In summary, the Harz narrow-gauge railways' new smoking ban is an important step towards increasing safety and protecting the environment in a region that often has to contend with fires. Travelers are urged to adhere to this ban - not only to avoid fines, but also to contribute to the safety of all passengers.
