Serious wildlife accident: Motorcycle collides with deer – two injured!

Yesterday evening, June 18, 2025, a serious wildlife accident occurred on the B 242 between Braunlage and Clausthal-Zellerfeld, which attracted the attention of drivers and the police alike. At approximately 10:30 p.m., a motorcycle with two people on board collided with a deer that was crossing the road. Unfortunately, this type of incident is not uncommon in Germany. According to ADAC, an accident involving wildlife occurs every two minutes, which means a total of around 265,000 reported cases in 2022. Over a million wild animals die on Germany's roads every year.

In this accident, the motorcycle fell after the collision and slid a few meters across the road. Both the driver and the passenger suffered injuries and had to be taken to a nearby hospital by emergency services. The exact severity of the injuries cannot yet be estimated. The police have already issued a warning about an increased risk of wildlife crossing in the region. The risk of accidents involving wildlife is particularly increased in the evening and early morning hours.

Prevention of wildlife accidents

Awareness of wildlife crossings is crucial to avoid such accidents. Experts recommend driving with foresight, especially in forested areas or near fields. Emergency braking assistants, which many modern vehicles have, are generally not optimized for detecting wild animals, which further increases the danger. It is advisable to drive particularly carefully, especially in risk zones, and to always turn on the hazard warning lights should a collision occur.

If an accident occurs with wild animals, the scene of the accident should be secured immediately and, if necessary, the police should be called on 110. It is important that injured wild animals should not be touched with bare hands. Instead, they should be pulled to the edge of the track. Anyone who acts responsibly can contribute to road safety and possibly avoid more serious consequences.

Wildlife accidents at a glance

According to a comprehensive survey by the Wildlife Institute in Baden-Württemberg, the most common animals involved in accidents are deer, followed by wild boars and foxes. The data collected provides important insights that will help reduce the number of accidents involving wildlife. A worrying increase in wildlife accidents has been observed over the last three years, necessitating increased prevention and education measures.

The future-oriented investigation of accidents involving wild animals shows that special measures must be developed to promote safety on the roads. Whether by installing traffic signs about wildlife crossings or by integrating wild animal detection into modern driving assistance systems - there is still a lot of room for improvement here. The protection of wildlife and the safety of road users must go hand in hand.

In the current situation, it is essential to be attentive and careful as a road user. The clear goal remains: to reduce accidents involving wildlife and thereby significantly improve road safety. In the hope that such accidents will soon be a thing of the past, we wish everyone affected by the accident a speedy recovery.
