Dream house in the Harz: couple fights against unexpected hurdles!

The Harz is known for its dense forests, picturesque landscapes and idyllic villages, which are attracting more and more people, especially these days. Many people are looking for relaxation and a retreat from hectic everyday life in this beautiful region. This also applies to the couple Anke and Ulrich Brockhaus from Hildesheim, who were looking for a second home in the Harz for years. They finally found a charming moat house in the Upper Harz, which they not only wanted to use themselves but also rent out as a holiday apartment. news38.de reports that modernizing this monument was not the only challenge.

After purchasing the moat house, the Brockhaus encountered various difficulties: an unreliable well did not provide enough water, and the property boundary was unclear because the previous owners' fence did not correspond to the actual size of the property. Access to the house was via a private road for which they had to pay an annual fee, which was an additional burden. In order to acquire the necessary access rights, they had to locate the previous owners, which turned out to be much more difficult than expected. The municipality was unable to help them due to data protection regulations.

The challenges of vacation rentals

The trench house, which offers space for up to six people with its three bedrooms and two bathrooms, is a promising holiday apartment. This is located on the ground floor and is ideally located, only about 1.5 km from the town center, as harz-travel.de describes. Nevertheless, the rental was more complex than the Brockhausers had initially assumed. They had to meet requirements such as providing fire water for the fire department in order to legally receive guests. Despite all these challenges, the Brockhaus have never considered giving up the Grabenhaus.

The positive feedback from their guests and the relaxing moments in the Upper Harz encouraged the couple in their decision. Anke Brockhaus emphasizes that you don't regret the purchase, but you have to make sure you don't just spend your time working. With a little support and intensive research, they overcame the initial difficulties and realized their dream of their own retreat in the Harz Mountains.

View of the market for holiday apartments in the Harz

immolina.de is explained, buyers today have become more cautious and attach great importance to the energy efficiency of homes. Inflation and the energy crisis also make the properties' profitability much more difficult.

Demand for vacation rentals may be increasing overall, but it has become more selective. Buyers are primarily looking for well-located properties with a solid energy foundation. The market has changed and many buyers now have to carefully consider which holiday home they want to choose. Whether you are looking for a designer renovation in prime locations or investing in a complete renovation, the requirements are high.

For Anke and Ulrich Brockhaus, it was an exciting journey to turn their trench house into a retreat. With a lot of commitment and a clear goal in mind, they turned the challenges into opportunities. The Harz remains a place full of opportunities for those seeking relaxation and those who want to immerse themselves in the world of holiday rentals.
